# Quietra > Quietra is an iPhone app that plays sound for two jobs: focus and tinnitus. For focus it has 8 modes, each labeled with the strength of the published evidence behind it, a pomodoro timer, and music generated live on the device. For tinnitus it finds the pitch of the ringing in your ears with a two-minute guide, then plays masking sound shaped around that pitch, including a notched mode. Free to start, no accounts, no ads. Quietra is made by an independent developer and is available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad (iOS 16.0 or later). There is no Android version. Current version 1.2.2 (September 2026); first released July 2026. Support: support@quietra.app. It is a sound-masking tool for comfort and rest, not a medical device. ## Key facts - Focus: 8 modes (Focus: moderate evidence; Deep Focus: strong evidence; Study: mixed evidence; Creative: experimental evidence; Calm: moderate evidence; Recover: moderate evidence; Gamma 40 Hz: experimental evidence; Wind Down: moderate evidence). The core Focus mode weaves a 16 Hz amplitude pulse into the sound, following Woods et al., Communications Biology, 2024. - Pomodoro: 25-minute rounds, 5-minute breaks, a 15-minute long break after 4 rounds; countdown on the lock screen. - Music: 6 genres synthesized live on the device (Deep Techno, Drum & Bass, Deep House, Lo-fi Beats, Ambient Flow, Drone); no two sessions are the same. - Tinnitus: a two-minute ring finder (200 to 12,000 Hz, per ear), masking shaped around that pitch, and a notched mode that removes a narrow band at the ring (after Okamoto et al., PNAS, 2010). - Soundscapes: White noise, Pink noise, Brown noise, Rain, Ocean, Stream, Fan, Forest. The nature sounds are real recordings. - Adapts to you: a 2-second microphone listen sets the level for the room; an AirPods hearing test or Apple Health audiogram balances the ears; heart rate can pace the waves; the weather and time of day can pick the sound. - Playback: keeps playing when the screen locks, during calls and after an AirPods switch; sleep timers of 15, 30 or 60 minutes or until morning. - Privacy: no accounts, no ads, nothing sold. Tuning, journal, Health data and microphone measurements stay on the device. Only anonymous usage counts and crash reports leave it. - Price: Premium is $4.99 a week, $9.99 a month, $59.99 a year, or $129.99 once for Lifetime. Monthly and yearly start with a 3-day free trial. Free tier: the ring finder and the core focus mode; three soundscapes: white noise, rain, ocean; a sleep timer. ## Pages - [Home](https://quietra.app/): overview, features, pricing, FAQ - [Tinnitus masking](https://quietra.app/tinnitus-masking/): how the ring finder, notched masking and sleep timers work, with research references - [Focus sounds](https://quietra.app/focus-sounds/): the eight modes with evidence labels, the pomodoro timer, the music engine, and how the sound adapts - [Support and FAQ](https://quietra.app/support/): every question with its answer, plus contact - [Privacy Policy](https://quietra.app/privacy/) - [Terms of Use](https://quietra.app/terms/) - [Subscription Terms](https://quietra.app/subscription-terms/) - [App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/app/quietra-tinnitus-relief/id6788818637) ## FAQ - Q: What is Quietra? A: Quietra is an iPhone app that plays sound for two jobs: focus and tinnitus. For focus it has eight modes, each labeled with the strength of the published evidence behind it, a pomodoro timer, and music generated live on your device. For tinnitus it finds the pitch of the ringing in your ears with a two-minute guide, then plays masking sound shaped around that pitch, including a notched mode that cuts a narrow band out of the sound right at your ring. It keeps playing when the screen locks or a call comes in. It is free to start, has no accounts and no ads, and runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 16 or later. - Q: How is Quietra different from a white noise app? A: Three things. A white noise app plays one generic sound; Quietra first measures the pitch of your ring and shapes the masking around it, with a notched mode that removes a narrow band at exactly that pitch. Its focus modes are built on named papers and each carries an evidence label, from strong to experimental, instead of a vague promise. And the sound adapts: a two-second listen sets the level for your room, your hearing test balances the ears, and the time of day and the weather can pick the sound. - Q: Do the focus sounds actually work? A: Honestly: the evidence varies by mode, and we label every mode with its level. The gentle amplitude pulse behind Focus and Deep Focus follows an approach validated in a large 2024 peer-reviewed study; binaural and 40 Hz modes carry moderate or lab-stage evidence and say so on their card. Nothing in the app pretends to be medicine, and the best test is a free session with your actual to-do list. - Q: I do not have tinnitus. Is Quietra for me? A: Yes. On the first screen you pick what brought you here: focus, study and sleep sound, or tinnitus masking. The focus side is a full product: eight modes, a pomodoro timer, generative music, and sound that adapts to your room, your hearing and the time of day. The masking side simply stays out of your way. - Q: Is Quietra a medical device? A: No. Quietra is a sound-masking tool for comfort and rest. It is not a medical device and is not a substitute for professional care. If the ringing in your ears is new, sudden, or only on one side, please see a doctor or audiologist. - Q: Why is the ringing louder at night? A: When the room goes quiet, there is less everyday sound to sit on top of the ringing, so it stands out more, which is exactly when you are trying to fall asleep. Quietra fills that silence with a soundscape tuned to your pitch, so the ringing steps into the background. - Q: Does it keep playing during calls and when the screen locks? A: Yes. The sound keeps going when your screen locks, when a call comes in, and when you switch to AirPods, the moments other apps tend to get wrong. You can pause it or see what is playing right from your lock screen, without unlocking. A sleep timer can fade it out on its own. - Q: Will it drain my battery overnight? A: It is built to be gentle on battery. Playback is lightweight, and a sleep timer can fade the sound out after a set time or once you have drifted off, so it is not running any longer than you need. - Q: How do I cancel or manage my subscription? A: Everything is handled by Apple. Open iOS Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and choose Quietra to change or cancel. If you are on the free trial, cancel at least 24 hours before it ends to avoid being charged. We also send one friendly heads-up the day before the trial converts. - Q: How do refunds work? A: Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not by us. You can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com or support.apple.com/HT204084. - Q: What do I get for free, and what needs Premium? A: Free includes the ring finder, the core Focus mode, three soundscapes (White noise, Rain, Ocean), and a sleep timer. Premium adds all eight focus modes, the generative music engine (Deep Techno, Drum & Bass, Deep House, Lo-fi Beats, Ambient Flow, Drone), notched masking, the full soundscape library, per-ear tuning, all sleep timers including "until morning", and your progress history. Premium is $4.99 a week, $9.99 a month, $59.99 a year, or $129.99 once for Lifetime. Monthly and yearly start with a 3-day free trial. - Q: Which devices does Quietra run on? A: iPhone and iPad with iOS 16 or later, from the App Store. There is no Android or Apple Watch version. Any headphones or speaker work; the two binaural modes, Study and Calm, need headphones because they send a slightly different tone to each ear. - Q: How do I restore my purchase on a new device? A: Sign in to the new iPhone with the same Apple ID, install Quietra, open the paywall, and tap Restore Purchases. Your Premium access transfers automatically. Family Sharing is on, so household members on your Apple Family can use Premium too. - Q: The sound stopped playing. What should I check? A: Make sure your iPhone is not in Silent mode with volume all the way down, that Quietra has permission to play in the background, and that a sleep timer has not already faded it out. If you switched audio outputs (for example to AirPods), reopen Quietra and start the sound again. - Q: Does my data leave my device? A: Your journal, check-ins, the pitch you tuned, everything read from Apple Health (your audiogram, pulse and sleep), and what the microphone hears during a room measurement all stay on your device. The only things that leave it are anonymous usage counts, crash reports, and, if you turn the weather feature on, rounded coordinates sent to a weather service with nothing else attached.
